What a good steel takeoff includes

8 October 2026 · 1 min read

Tonnage on its own is not a price. A takeoff you can stand behind accounts for everything that turns sections into a frame on site.

  • Every beam, column, brace and rafter, with its section size, length and weight per metre.
  • Counts that match the engineer’s schedule, with any differences listed rather than quietly resolved.

The parts that are easy to miss

  • Connections: end plates, fin plates, cleats, stiffeners and haunches.
  • Fittings: cap and base plates, holding-down bolts, packs and shims.
  • Secondary steel: trimmers, lintels, edge angles, wind posts and support framing.
  • Protection: paint or galvanising areas, and fire protection where it is specified.

Why a fabricator measures differently

We fabricate steelwork in our own workshop, so we measure the way it is cut, drilled and welded. That is why our takeoffs list the clarifications that change a price, not just the weight.
